It can take time to become proficient working with music theory, and the more practice you can get, the faster your ability and confidence will improve. That's the reasoning behind adding this bonus content. Originally I just wanted to add further examples to help those who needed them, but as I began teaching I found myself bringing out fresh perspective that didn't make it into the main course.
So, you will find some fresh techniques in here, as well as many additional examples of working with these theory related topics.
Each of the four lessons below are linked to a lesson in Guitar Theory Unlocked; my recommendation is to simply go through that course first, and as you come across a lesson with a bonus linked to it, make your way over here and do the appropriate lesson at that time.
Learning how to “hack” chords has been a tremendous source of musical inspiration and creativity for me, and I hope it will become that for you too!
This is a short course, focused on the specific issue of modifying chords. I highly recommend that you first take my Guitar Theory Unlocked course, as that establishes the important foundation of how chords are extracted from the key.
Without that foundation, you might feel a little lost as we go through these examples.
Learning how chords are built using theory is really important, but the more you work with them, the more the principles just become second nature, and you can begin to hack chords on the fly, without having to think too deeply about what’s going on.
