Guitar Theory Bonus Practice

Welcome to the Bonus Theory Practice Room!

It can take time to become proficient working with music theory, and the more practice you can get, the faster your ability and confidence will improve. That's the reasoning behind adding this bonus content. Originally I just wanted to add further examples to help those who needed them, but as I began teaching I found myself bringing out fresh perspective that didn't make it into the main course.

So, you will find some fresh techniques in here, as well as many additional examples of working with these theory related topics.

Each of the four lessons below are linked to a lesson in Guitar Theory Unlocked; my recommendation is to simply go through that course first, and as you come across a lesson with a bonus linked to it, make your way over here and do the appropriate lesson at that time.

Chord Hacking 101

Learning how to “hack” chords has been a tremendous source of musical inspiration and creativity for me, and I hope it will become that for you too!

This is a short course, focused on the specific issue of modifying chords. I highly recommend that you first take my Guitar Theory Unlocked course, as that establishes the important foundation of how chords are extracted from the key.

Without that foundation, you might feel a little lost as we go through these examples.

Learning how chords are built using theory is really important, but the more you work with them, the more the principles just become second nature, and you can begin to hack chords on the fly, without having to think too deeply about what’s going on.

Before you get started, you may want to print yourself a copy of the course supplement. You download it here

Guitar Theory Unlocked

Welcome to Guitar Theory Unlocked! I really believe this course is going to transform how you approach music in general, and the guitar in particular. A few important points before we dive in:

  • To unlock the next lesson, be sure to click the green "Mark Complete" button underneath each lesson as you complete it.
  • Each major section has a quiz that must be completed before you can move on to the next section.
  • Please ASK QUESTIONS! I am happy to clarify and help out wherever I can; please use the comments area under each lesson to ask relevant questions.
  • The course book content is posted as part of each lesson; however you can also download the book and print it yourself if you wish:

The bonus content is available here but is also linked directly from the relevant lessons in this course. I recommend viewing it either as you discover it while going through Guitar Theory Unlocked, or else after you have completed GTU.

The Rhythm Player’s Guide to Picking

Welcome to the Rhythm Player's Guide to Picking! My goal for this course is to help you really expand the picking side of your rhythm expression on guitar. We've got lots of patterns, techniques, and tools that I hope you're going to really connect with.

Please ask questions as you go through the course! I welcome questions - the comments area under each video is best, though you can also email me directly.

This course has been designed for use right here, on the website. You can ask questions in context with the material, and also benefit from the course tracker. However, if you need to take the course offline, you can find the download links here.

Bar Chords Made Simple

Welcome to the Bar Chords Made Simple course! My goal for this course is to help you achieve a breakthrough and make bar chords a regular part of your guitar experience.

If you have any questions as you go through the material, please use the comments area below the videos – or shoot me an email via the support desk – and I’ll be happy to help as best as I can!

Don’t forget to download the Course Supplement PDF as well – you’ll probably find it handy to refer to as we go through the course.

Toolbox for D Major

Welcome to the Toolbox for D Major course! My goal for this course is to give you a whole bunch of different tools that you can use to make your rhythm playing much, much more interesting.

Jamming while you’re playing rhythm guitar takes a very different approach than you might use for playing single-note lead lines. When you’re playing rhythm at the same time, you need to be adding melodies to your chords. That means that your chords need to become a goldmine of inspiration for you.

That’s what this course is all about. I hope you’re inspired to create beautiful music as a result!

Box 1 Blues Soloing

Welcome to the Box 1 Blues Soloing course! My aim for this course is to give you some cool guitar licks that you can add to your arsenal, while learning them in the context of jam track that really allows you to go deep with each lick. Once you learn to truly modify each lick and twist it into different situations, it becomes very powerful - and musical.

If you have any questions about the course content, please use the comments area below the videos, and if possible, reference what point in the video your question relates to. To download, click the large button below. If you're watching online, don't forget to still download the course book!

My aim for this course is to give you some cool guitar licks that you can add to your arsenal, while learning them in the context of a solo you can practice against a backing track. But even more than that, I hope you'll start to connect with how those licks and riffs are related to the chord progression, and develop your ability to start targeting the chords this way in your own solos.
