I'm not going to beat around the bush: some guitar solos just ARE better than others.

We could say otherwise, and argue that it's all artistic expression, and beauty-in-the-ear-of-the-listener, but I think you know as well as I do that some solos seem to fit the song perfectly, and other solos just don't. Some solos are pleasing to the ear, and remain in your memory long after the song ends, and others just come... and then they're gone. Some solos sound like a flood of meaningless notes, jumbled all one after the other, but then there are others where you could swear that guitar was actually talking to you!

This subject of what makes one guitar solo better than another captured my interest, and so I began digging... and on that journey, I discovered a few secrets that I'd love to share with you.

Many guitar players have expressed to me that they feel like there's this huge block between what they hear inside, and what they're able to play. Whenever they go to solo, the same old notes and sounds come out, regardless of what song they're playing.

They feel stunted, blocked, and discouraged.

In short, they're looking for a way out of the rut they find themselves in... a way back to the land of creativity and free expression on their guitar.

And what they're really looking for is a way to add some real zest and spice to their playing, to find ways of coming up with interesting and well, "tasty" things to play.

"Tasty" guitar playing isn't necessarily fast, it's probably not flashy, and it certainly isn't dependent on the type of music you're playing. Instead, "tasty" guitar playing is the kind of thing that when people hear you pull off a tasty lick, they think "Mmm yeah! That really hit the spot!"

The reason why it sounds so delicious is that it really did "hit the spot" musically speaking. In other words, the notes in the riff were laser-targeted to harmonize perfectly with the chord being played in the progression at that exact moment. There's nothing left to chance; this is a deliberate, highly creative style of playing, and let me tell you...

It is incredibly fun and satisfying to pull off a tasty lick or solo!

When I started applying these principles to my own guitar playing, I started getting comments from other guys in the band, like "Man, whatever you were playing on that last song was really tasty!" Ultimately, those comments are what inspired the name of this course, Secrets of Tasty Riffs & Solos.

It's not that they didn't like my playing before... but they sure seemed to like it a lot more when I began applying the principles I'm about to share with you!

Secrets of Chord-Chasing Leads

There are many different approaches to soloing on guitar, and I dare say, there's no "right" answer. It's all about what you want to express, and how you want to do it. One of the most popular approaches to soloing, and one of the best starting points, is to learn a scale pattern, learn riffs that come from that pattern, and then begin piecing those riffs together into solos.

One major benefit of this approach is you don't have to move around the fretboard very much, and that's perfect for players just getting their feet wet, so to speak. You can stay in one position regardless of the chords being played, and you can make great sounding music.

It's a very powerful and dearly loved approach used by millions of players worldwide. And for good reason.

But in Secrets of Tasty Riffs & Solos, we're going to take a totally different approach. Instead of anchoring to a scale pattern, we're going to hook ourselves to the chords being played in the progression, instead!

This means we'll be moving around a lot more. It also means we'll be working hard to bring your musicianship up a big step, to the point where you're intuitively aware of exactly what chord is being played at any given time. This takes some practice and some effort, but with the help of the practice jam videos included in the course, you'll find this is actually quite an enjoyable process.

You will be able to follow the chords around the fretboard like a magnet, every note in your riffs laser-targeted like a smart bomb to produce as much melodic satisfaction as possible.

It's hard not to feel great about your guitar playing, when that's the sort of stuff you're playing! If you're playing lead guitar, chances are you only get to spend a small portion of your time in the spotlight, so to speak. In my experience, at least 80% of the time I still end up playing rhythm, trying to find something that isn't exactly the same as what the other guitar is playing!

This brings up a small problem: if you're being sensitive to the band, you can't just wander around, blissfully soloing over top of the whole song. Some guys do this, but it doesn't end up sounding very tasteful; it doesn't really serve to build the song.

Also, it doesn't make sense to play the same chords and positions as the other guitar player... because that space is already taken!

Rather than feel stuck by this situation, this is your opportunity to embrace the challenge and find something to play that cuts a nice line down the middle... weaving a little bit of lead with a little bit of rhythm.

The end result is a tasteful, subtle guitar part that complements the rhythm - and melody - perfectly, all the while blending beautifully into the mix. Don't worry - you'll get that crack at the spotlight, but trust me, your band members will LOVE it when you play rhythm this way! I'll give you dozens of ideas to get you started, and you can use these either to supplement the rhythm playing, or to create your own "sniper shots" in the spaces between vocals.

Because they switchback on themselves while still moving forward, they end up sounding very cool played either fast or slow.

Have you ever watched a wind turbine in action? It’s amazing. You just put that thing in the right place, and the wind does all the hard work for you.

On the guitar, there are many patterns of notes that reproduce themselves reliably across the fretboard. As you learn some of these patterns, you’ll find you can simply haul out that pattern from time to time, and allow it do the hard work of creating something beautiful and musical for you.

Better Sounding Riffs:
Scientifically Proven.

I mentioned earlier that science could prove some music sounds better than the others, and it’s true. Every musical note has a frequency, measured by a number. For instance, an open A on your guitar is 220 Hz. I’m not going to get into the math here, but when certain pairs of notes are played together, if you had the equipment, you could actually see how they vibrate in consonance with each other. Without the equipment, your ear can still reliably tell you when this happens, because it sounds good.

On the flip side, other pairs of notes are dissonant. That means their sound waves are sloshing around like the waves produced when 5 people jump into a swimming pool together – they crash into each other, and that just isn’t pleasing to the human ear.

This doesn’t only apply when notes are played simultaneously – the human ear also picks up on this when notes are played in sequence as well. That means we can use these principles to create cool doublestop lines (where notes are played together), and we can also use them to create awesome sounding single-note lines as well.

If you’re interested, Princeton did a cool study on it and you can go all the way down that rabbit hole. But none of that is necessary in order to learn how to apply those principles to your playing. For that, we have to learn how the patterns and pairings apply to the guitar! But I do have some, and in many cases, those will lead you to yet others, which will lead to others. In Secrets of Tasty Riffs & Solos I'll give you the principles and understanding you'll need to take those next steps, but ultimately, it's up to you to go through that doorway. With these doorways clearly highlighted for you, if you take advantage of them, and go through, you will easily gain double or triple the value of the things we've covered in this course.

Not For Beginners

This is NOT a beginner course, and it is not a beginner's "learn-to-solo" course either. In order to really engage with this course and pull the maximum benefit from it, here's a short list of skills you should already have under your belt. In other words, if you don't have these already, the course will be a bit over your head, and you'd be better off to work on those foundations first.

Basic Guitar Theory - You don't need to be a whizz at your theory, but there is a lot of practically-applied theory in this course and it will be hard to follow if you don't know the basics of how chords, scales, and keys work. If theory is new to you, I recommend starting here instead. In the course book, there is a fairly thorough refresher section, but it should be treated as a refresher and not a ground-up foundation builder.

Basic Scale Patterns - This course approaches the fretboard from a very different standpoint than the traditional scale patterns approach; however it very much relies on you already knowing something of how the fretboard works. Again, some refresher will be provided but if you don't know what a scale pattern is, you'll learn faster by starting off here and building that foundation first.

Basic Familiarity With Playing Lead Guitar - This is not a beginning-level "learn how to solo course." You should be comfortable playing some scales and riffs. Full tab is provided for everything we're learning, so it's helpful (but not required) to know how to read tab and/or standard notation.
