Discover The Secrets Of Creating

Tasty, Memorable, and Perfectly-Fitting

Guitar Licks

I'm not going to beat around the bush: some guitar solos just ARE better than others.

We could say otherwise, and argue that it's all artistic expression, and beauty-in-the-ear-of-the-listener, but I think you know as well as I do that some solos seem to fit the song perfectly, and other solos just don't. Some solos are pleasing to the ear, and remain in your memory long after the song ends, and others just come... and then they're gone. Some solos sound like a flood of meaningless notes, jumbled all one after the other, but then there are others where you could swear that guitar was actually talking to you!

This subject of what makes one guitar solo better than another captured my interest, and so I began digging... and on that journey, I discovered a few secrets that I'd love to share with you.

Hi - my name is Jonathan Boettcher, and over the last seven years I’ve helped more than 13,200 guitar players achieve breakthroughs in their guitar playing, using just a few rarely-taught concepts that most guitar teachers avoid like the plague.

Back to the issue of good-sounding solos... it turns out that this can be proven scientifically! It has to do with consonance and dissonance, and the frequencies of the notes chosen. More on that later, but here's what's important: if you can prove something scientifically, then there must also be reliable ways to reproduce it... Every. Single. Time.

If you'd like to take your guitar soloing to the next level, keep reading, because what I'm about to share with you has the power to completely transform your guitar playing.

Tired Of Bland, Tasteless Solos That All Sound The Same?

Many guitar players have expressed to me that they feel like there's this huge block between what they hear inside, and what they're able to play. Whenever they go to solo, the same old notes and sounds come out, regardless of what song they're playing.

They feel stunted, blocked, and discouraged.

In short, they're looking for a way out of the rut they find themselves in... a way back to the land of creativity and free expression on their guitar.

And what they're really looking for is a way to add some real zest and spice to their playing, to find ways of coming up with interesting and well, "tasty" things to play.

"Tasty" guitar playing isn't necessarily fast, it's probably not flashy, and it certainly isn't dependent on the type of music you're playing. Instead, "tasty" guitar playing is the kind of thing that when people hear you pull off a tasty lick, they think "Mmm yeah! That really hit the spot!"

The reason why it sounds so delicious is that it really did "hit the spot" musically speaking. In other words, the notes in the riff were laser-targeted to harmonize perfectly with the chord being played in the progression at that exact moment. There's nothing left to chance; this is a deliberate, highly creative style of playing, and let me tell you...

It is incredibly fun and satisfying to pull off a tasty lick or solo!

When I started applying these principles to my own guitar playing, I started getting comments from other guys in the band, like "Man, whatever you were playing on that last song was really tasty!" Ultimately, those comments are what inspired the name of this course, Secrets of Tasty Riffs & Solos.

It's not that they didn't like my playing before... but they sure seemed to like it a lot more when I began applying the principles I'm about to share with you!

Guitar Licks That Stand Out

A lot of people teach how to play great-sounding guitar riffs, but very few talk about the real, functional mechanics of how to create your very own head-turning guitar licks. In Secrets of Tasty Riffs & Solos, you'll learn a LOT of riffs. But even more importantly, you're also going to learn what makes them tick, right down to exactly why each note of the riff sounds so great over top of that specific part of the chord progression.

Yes, there are actual reasons why these notes work so well together!

The veil of mystery will be pulled back, and you will begin seeing the fretboard in a completely different light. You'll have the keys to creating tasty, perfectly fitted guitar licks anywhere on the neck, and over any chord or progression. You'll have the power to make them stand out like a red rose in a sea of white... or let them slip softly and subtly into the delicate tapestry of the music.

Forget writer's block... you won't know what to do with all the new ideas pouring from your fingers onto the frets!

"Tasty Thirds and Transition Runs"

Just wanted you to know that I just finished some “head” work laying out thirds in the key of "A".  Then I grabbed my acoustic and just let it rip.

I messed with the pentatonic and then layered in some – as you say -tasty thirds and some transition runs

What a hoot! Not very good yet but what an improvement.

Thanks for your best series ever.

Secrets of Chord-Chasing Leads

There are many different approaches to soloing on guitar, and I dare say, there's no "right" answer. It's all about what you want to express, and how you want to do it. One of the most popular approaches to soloing, and one of the best starting points, is to learn a scale pattern, learn riffs that come from that pattern, and then begin piecing those riffs together into solos.

One major benefit of this approach is you don't have to move around the fretboard very much, and that's perfect for players just getting their feet wet, so to speak. You can stay in one position regardless of the chords being played, and you can make great sounding music.

It's a very powerful and dearly loved approach used by millions of players worldwide. And for good reason.

But in Secrets of Tasty Riffs & Solos, we're going to take a totally different approach. Instead of anchoring to a scale pattern, we're going to hook ourselves to the chords being played in the progression, instead!

This means we'll be moving around a lot more. It also means we'll be working hard to bring your musicianship up a big step, to the point where you're intuitively aware of exactly what chord is being played at any given time. This takes some practice and some effort, but with the help of the practice jam videos included in the course, you'll find this is actually quite an enjoyable process.

You will be able to follow the chords around the fretboard like a magnet, every note in your riffs laser-targeted like a smart bomb to produce as much melodic satisfaction as possible.

It's hard not to feel great about your guitar playing, when that's the sort of stuff you're playing! If you've previously learned the scale pattern approach, that's perfect because after learning this new approach, the two will blend together and become even more powerful than either one could ever be on it's own!

Deliver Tasty "Sniper Shots"
That Make The Song Come Alive

If you're playing lead guitar, chances are you only get to spend a small portion of your time in the spotlight, so to speak. In my experience, at least 80% of the time I still end up playing rhythm, trying to find something that isn't exactly the same as what the other guitar is playing!

This brings up a small problem: if you're being sensitive to the band, you can't just wander around, blissfully soloing over top of the whole song. Some guys do this, but it doesn't end up sounding very tasteful; it doesn't really serve to build the song.

Also, it doesn't make sense to play the same chords and positions as the other guitar player... because that space is already taken!

Rather than feel stuck by this situation, this is your opportunity to embrace the challenge and find something to play that cuts a nice line down the middle... weaving a little bit of lead with a little bit of rhythm.

The end result is a tasteful, subtle guitar part that complements the rhythm - and melody - perfectly, all the while blending beautifully into the mix. Don't worry - you'll get that crack at the spotlight, but trust me, your band members will LOVE it when you play rhythm this way! I'll give you dozens of ideas to get you started, and you can use these either to supplement the rhythm playing, or to create your own "sniper shots" in the spaces between vocals.

Move Around Your Fretboard With Ease
By Building Ladders That Can Move You
A Dozen Frets Or More!

If you've learned the traditional scale patterns approach to the fretboard, you may still be left wondering how some players manage to create these amazing runs that span 6, 10, 12 or more frets. In Secrets of Tasty Riffs & Solos we'll look at a several different ways you can build "ladders" to go up or down the fretboard with ease, and you can make them as long or as short as you like.

These riffs are perfect for transitioning from a lower scale pattern to one way up high on the fretboard, and they'll help you make it sound like the journey getting there was just as important as the destination! Because they switchback on themselves while still moving forward, they end up sounding very cool played either fast or slow.

Blend Heavenly Harmonies Into Your Solos

Have you ever wished you could thicken up your solos so they had more happening, musically speaking? That you could add harmony to the lead line you're playing, in just the right places? Or make your solos sound like a real melody, full of delightful musical delicacies - instead of just a string of random notes?

There are proven strategies for doing all that and more - and that's what Secrets of Tasty Riffs & Solos is all about.

One of the most satisfying musical harmonies is the third. If you listen closely to a capella groups, they're all over this like water on a submarine. In fact, thirds are so satisfying to the human ear that they're the very foundation for how chords themselves are constructed. When we work off those intervals - not by playing the exact same notes in the same positions of course, but finding other areas, combinations, and octaves to work with - the end result is the riff sounds custom-fitted to the progression while still sounding very much like a creative, tasteful lead line.

What EXACTLY Will I Learn?

Secrets of Tasty Riffs & Solos is broken into three main sections:

The first section takes a very detailed look at all the patterns we're going to be working with in the rest of the course. This is where you'll see visuallyhow many different patterns of thirds can be used to cover the fretboard, and how you can make riffs that sound really cool using all kinds of different string combinations and positions.

In the second section, we'll begin working with a jam track, and learn how we can improvise rhythm or lead lines over top of a progression, using chords and triads as our foundation. You'll be delighted to discover just how easy and simultaneously satisfying it is to work with the patterns in this fashion.

In the last main section of the course, we're going to work with four separate jam tracks, and learn over 160 bars of solos written for them. This is where you'll discover a treasure trove of riffs (nearly every bar has a riff in it!) you'll be able to use in your own playing, and it's also where you'll really get a chance to see how the mechanics of the theory fit together in a highly practical way to create tasty licks and solos.

Additionally, the course supplement book that comes included with the course approaches the same topics from a written perspective. If you learn well by reading, you'll enjoy the fact that this is far more than a collection of tabs. The book is more than 16,000 words, plus many diagrams, and of course, all the tabs you need. It walks through the theory and explanations in detail, and often highlights additional details to what you find in the video.

Harnessing The Power Of Patterns

Have you ever watched a wind turbine in action? It’s amazing. You just put that thing in the right place, and the wind does all the hard work for you.

On the guitar, there are many patterns of notes that reproduce themselves reliably across the fretboard. As you learn some of these patterns, you’ll find you can simply haul out that pattern from time to time, and allow it do the hard work of creating something beautiful and musical for you.

The patterns are easily modified and adapted, so they are extremely flexible, and can sound different every time you play them, and yet, they provide a framework for ear-pleasing riffs you can depend on.

The more patterns we can learn, the more we’re able to use the fretboard to the fullest. The patterns you’ll master in Secrets of Tasty Riffs & Solos produce reliably great-sounding results.

Simply put the pattern to work for you, and sit back and marvel at the results!

Better Sounding Riffs:
Scientifically Proven.

I mentioned earlier that science could prove some music sounds better than the others, and it’s true. Every musical note has a frequency, measured by a number. For instance, an open A on your guitar is 220 Hz. I’m not going to get into the math here, but when certain pairs of notes are played together, if you had the equipment, you could actually see how they vibrate in consonance with each other. Without the equipment, your ear can still reliably tell you when this happens, because it sounds good.

On the flip side, other pairs of notes are dissonant. That means their sound waves are sloshing around like the waves produced when 5 people jump into a swimming pool together – they crash into each other, and that just isn’t pleasing to the human ear.

This doesn’t only apply when notes are played simultaneously – the human ear also picks up on this when notes are played in sequence as well. That means we can use these principles to create cool doublestop lines (where notes are played together), and we can also use them to create awesome sounding single-note lines as well.

If you’re interested, Princeton did a cool study on it and you can go all the way down that rabbit hole. But none of that is necessary in order to learn how to apply those principles to your playing. For that, we have to learn how the patterns and pairings apply to the guitar! That’s exactly what Secrets of Tasty Riffs & Solos digs into; you’ll learn how to create guitar licks that tap into the hard-wired musical sweet spot of our brains.

"Exceptionally Helpful"

Jonathan, this is an exceptionally helpful lesson.

It really feels that this is taking me onto a new stage in my playing. So much to learn and rehearse, but you have explained the theory in a brilliant way. Many thanks.

"A Lightbulb Went On"

I have purchased several of your courses and I am just getting started on Secrets of Tasty Riffs & Solos. A lightbulb went on and I pulled out the TAB on one of my favorite acoustic songs, Operator, by Jim Croce. I have studied the accompanied guitar part by Maury Muehleisen and could not figure out how he came up with such beautiful fills until now.

He is playing thirds like you describe in the course, in the key of G.

I believe what you say about how “tasty” these can sound as I have always loved the guitar on that song and now I know why!

As you can see, these players span all kinds of different genres. You'll find these used in rock, blues, country, jazz and every other type of music you can think of. The principles you learn here can be universally applied! Checkout what John Frusciante has to say about this topic:

John Frusciante
Red Hot Chili Peppers

"You can't forget that it's all about playing music, it's not about what you can show people that you can do with a piece of wood in your hands that has strings on it. The idea is to make sounds that are good, and in music, that's really so much about the relationship between the different things.

For me, if I'm sitting at home studying a particular guitar solo, it's not enough for me to just learn the solo, I have to make sure that I understand the relationship between the notes that the lead player is playing, and the chords that are being played behind it, or the bass line that's being played behind it.

I think that the fact that I take that approach to it comes out a lot in my soloing, because I'm often really absorbed in what the bass and the drums are doing, and I'm really thinking about trying to create dimension and relationship to that. I'm not thinking in terms of "oh good, they're giving me a blank canvas, now I can go crazy over it."

It's more like a constant interaction with the other people playing."

Many famous hit songs through the years have relied on riffs custom-crafted to the chord progression for their iconic lead lines. The question is, would you like to learn the same secrets they used to create those leads?

A Road Map For Further Exploration

No guitar course on the face of this planet can be truly comprehensive in nature, covering all angles of playing the instrument. There's just too much to cover. More to the point, no human alive has all that information in one place. I don't have ALL the secrets of creating amazing solos, and I'm not ashamed to say so either. But I do have some, and in many cases, those will lead you to yet others, which will lead to others. In Secrets of Tasty Riffs & Solos I'll give you the principles and understanding you'll need to take those next steps, but ultimately, it's up to you to go through that doorway. With these doorways clearly highlighted for you, if you take advantage of them, and go through, you will easily gain double or triple the value of the things we've covered in this course.

Not For Beginners

This is NOT a beginner course, and it is not a beginner's "learn-to-solo" course either. In order to really engage with this course and pull the maximum benefit from it, here's a short list of skills you should already have under your belt. In other words, if you don't have these already, the course will be a bit over your head, and you'd be better off to work on those foundations first.

Basic Guitar Theory - You don't need to be a whizz at your theory, but there is a lot of practically-applied theory in this course and it will be hard to follow if you don't know the basics of how chords, scales, and keys work. If theory is new to you, I recommend starting here instead. In the course book, there is a fairly thorough refresher section, but it should be treated as a refresher and not a ground-up foundation builder.

Basic Scale Patterns - This course approaches the fretboard from a very different standpoint than the traditional scale patterns approach; however it very much relies on you already knowing something of how the fretboard works. Again, some refresher will be provided but if you don't know what a scale pattern is, you'll learn faster by starting off here and building that foundation first.

Basic Familiarity With Playing Lead Guitar - This is not a beginning-level "learn how to solo course." You should be comfortable playing some scales and riffs. Full tab is provided for everything we're learning, so it's helpful (but not required) to know how to read tab and/or standard notation.

In short, Secrets of Tasty Riffs & Solos is perfect for intermediate to advanced guitar players who have some experience soloing, have some foundation in theory, and are looking for new ways to approach the fretboard. Above all, this course is for you if you're looking for ways to make your solos more musical and sound like they're custom-crafted exactly for the song you're playing.

Some more of what you can expect to find inside:

  • 3 killer tricks to make your licks sound hot and dynamic
  • A dead-easy trick that instantly makes your solo “pop” from the rest of the song
  • 1 super easy trick that will turn a plain-as-vanilla major triad into a slick blues riff
  • Triple the value of chords you already know
  • 3 pairs of notes you can play ANYWHERE over a progression and it will sound awesome
  • Build bridges between scale patterns with ease, like playing snakes ’n ladders on your fretboard
  • Develop a “sixth-sense” that stays locked to the progression while you solo
  • Predict where the best note to end your solo will be, bars in advance
  • Break your dependence on scale patterns with a completely new approach to the fretboard (it still dovetails perfectly with the old scale patterns approach though!)
  • Systemize your process for creating new riffs and licks
  • Revitalize simple three-chord style songs into ridiculously fun and entertaining jams

A Proven, Effective Way To Learn

Many of the guitar lesson videos you find online are of poor audio or video quality, it's hard to see the fretboard or figure out what's going on. Not so with Secrets of Tasty Riffs & Solos. From multiple and varied camera angles, to onscreen tab and chord diagrams, I've always worked to ensure that the approach was always appropriate for the topic covered. No matter what the subject matter is, you can rest assured you will be able to see - and hear - in detail what is being taught. Below you can see screenshots from the course itself, showing the four different camera angles in use, along with onscreen tabs and diagrams.

Course Supplement Book Included

The course supplement book (available on PDF) included with the course truly supplements and adds to what you will find in the video. From theory to detailed discussions of riffs and patterns, you will find this an invaluable study tool.

If you learn well by reading, you'll enjoy the fact that this is far more than a collection of tabs like most other "supplement" books you find. The book is more than 16,000 words, has many large diagrams, and of course, all the tabs you need.

Also included in the course:

  • 4 Full length jam tracks on MP3
  • 4 Jam track videos showing the chord changes in real time

"It All Makes So Much Sense Now"

The course is really well done and has been very helpful to me. I’ve heard these sorts of riffs/fills/lines/solos before (as you’ve mentioned, they’re in lots of songs!) and I always thought they sounded great, but I never really thought through how to play them. How did those guitar players know what pairs of notes would sound good? It was a bit of a mystery to me…

After seeing your “Tasty Riffs and Solos” course, it all makes so much sense now. Thank you for introducing me to this world – this is something that I have started using already and will definitely continue to use in the future!
